Digital Context: Exploring Trends in Digital Publishing & Web Technology

The Reading Experience

I came upon an interesting post at the if:book web site that was celebrating the release of the laser disc back in 1984. Looking back, the fascinating thing is how Criterion developed their logo to represent a book turning into a disc. This was to represent the kind of instant functionality and navigation digital media would provide, similar to paging back and forth in a book.

A lot has changed since 1984. E-ink and Amazon have finally jump-started the eBook business. We’re on the verge of a new revolution in digital media. Based on all the buzz I’ve heard, there is going to be a lot of new players in the “eReader” field next year. Will the Nook add up? Will Apple release the rumored iTablet?

We will always have physical books that will continue to provide an intimate, personal reading experience. However, as technology grows and expands, the experience of reading will continue to change in new and exciting ways as well.
